| Capping Head with Torque Transducer
Cap Coder have teamed up with Sensor Technology to produce a new Capping Torque Head with a built in torque transducer.
The 'Torqsense' transducer acurately measures the torque applied to the cap on the bottle,
and will supply digital and analog data which will give proof of performance, consistency and batch tracability
during the capping operation.
The data can be used and displayed in several ways.
On a simple panel mounted digital display.
Using a lap top pc running Sensor Technology's 'Torqview' software package, which will display the applied torque
in digital and graphical modes and also enable the torque readings to be stored on the hard drive for analysis later.
Using an analog input of the machine control PLC to check that the applied torque values are within the limits set by the
manufacturer and raising alarms if the values fall outside these limits.
Using a digital recorder which will provide validation and secure data collection compliant with 21 CFR Part 11 regulations.
The new torque head can be incorporated into Cap Coder's extensive range of automatic capping machines,
allowing for constant monitoring of the applied torque during a production run.
There is also available a enhanced version of their popular CC1440 semi-automatic cap tightening machine which incorporates
the new torque head, an ABB SM500F digital recorder for secure data collection, and applied torque monitoring through the machine control PLC.

| Filling and Capping Line
Cap Coder have just supplied and installed a new filling and capping line for Honeywood Ltd.
The line consists of a CC570 Filling Machine with twin diving nozzles, two Watson Marlow peristaltic pumps,
a 3 meter variable speed conveyor, where the caps are hand placed and a standard CC570 Cap Tightening machine.
Both machines use an adjustable gating system for product handling.
The filling machine gating and filling two containers at a time,
the capping machine gating and cap tightening one container at a time.
The line fills and caps 350ml containers at a rate of 30 per minute.
Honeywood placed the order with Cap Coder due to a twenty-five percent cost saving and the versatility of the machines to cope with a variety of new products.
The machines are PLC controlled with simple operator controls housed in IP65 enclosures.

| Filling and Capping with ROPP
Cap Coder have introduced an ROPP capping head into their CC1150 Filling and Capping machine.
The CC1150 machine has a CC720 torque head fitted as standard, but due to a recent enquiry with a supplier of
high quality olive oil and vinegar salad dressings in various sizes of containers, the smaller size of container
required the application of an ROPP cap.
A suitable ROPP head was chosen and integrated into the machine.
The machine is now capable of filling three sizes of container, tightening caps on two and rolling an ROPP aluminium cap on the third.
The ROPP head is capable of capping olive oil and similar style of caps from 8mm to 32mm diameter.

| A New On-line Cap Tightening Machine
A Cap Coder response to the current economic climate is a new capping machine with a low price tag.
What it will do is tighten pre-placed caps on bottles within an envelope size of 100mm square up to 300mm high at a production rate of 35/min.
Cap tightening at 35/min for around £14,000 - no hassle.
The in line gated system is built up to a standard, not down to a price, which will be well understood by Cap Coder’s existing clients.
Whereas many Cap Coder machines are heavily customised to suit very specific applications, this machine, the CC570, is intended to remain “standard” to
achieve the cost benefits of standardisation.
Minimal change parts and cost reduction follows from no starwheels, or fences or starwheel servo drive.
The torque head is the latest CC720 MkVI which has rubber lined gripping jaws and the bottle gripping pads may need to be formed
and lined to give good torque resistance without bottle distortion.
The machine can be used with an existing slat conveyor or a suitable conveyor can be supplied.
The machine can be adapted for press-on caps and ROPP caps.
The control system, housed in an IP65 enclosure, is electro-pneumatic and includes a plc and simple controls and indicators that
are already well proven in Cap Coder’s existing machines.

Cap it All
Screwing caps onto bottles is a specialist job well fitted
to the Tri-Torque Capping Head produced by Cap Coder.
The design of the Tri-Torque is based on the fact that if
a cap can be screwed onto a bottle by hand, it follows that
it can be done more efficiently and with less fatigue if
done by a mechanism possessing hand-like attributes.
The Cap Coder Tri-Torque capping head has 3 rubber lined
gripping fingers to grasp the cap. These can reach over
a variety of cap shapes, as diverse as spray nozzles, before
closing on the cap.
The added advantage of circumferential grip reduces cap
distortion whilst the rubber grips eliminate damage even
on highly reflective metallised surfaces.
As caps are normally unscrewed manually, the torque required
to tighten caps onto bottles tends to be low.
This need demands that the capping head has low friction
operation in order to allow accurate control to be applied.
In addition, the torque applied by the servomotor is controlled
for both torque and speed so that the reactionary mechanical
effects can be reduced if required.
The head is available in basic form of motorised rotor with
the 3-jaw grip mechanism ready for incorporation into an
existing product handling system.
Alternatively, it can be supplied with an integrated linear
transfer feature to facilitate engaging the cap. It also
has a 3 position transfer mechanism for picking the cap
before screwing it onto the bottle.
Finally, the twin swing head version comprises 2 Tri-Torque
heads mounted on a centrally pivoted beam so that in operation
one head picks a cap whilst the other screws its held cap
onto the bottle.

| Laboratory Filler Capper
This filling and screw capping machine is aimed at the laboratory small batch
production market and similar applications where operational overheads are high.
Historically, these industries have relied upon Cap Coder’s well proven bench
mounted capping machine for small batch runs; the CC1150.
But Cap Coder has now re-designed this model and developed the new CC1170 which addresses the challenges
of changing production needs.
This machine was demonstrated for the first time at
PPMA 2006 Birmingham 26-28 Sep Stand D60 and Macropak 2006 Utrecht 3-6 Oct
Stand 1C 060
The prime aim of the CC1170 is to reduce the dependence on highly qualified
expensive operators whilst making the machine compact and easily manoeuvrable
within the confines of limited costly production space. In this regard it has many
advantages over the CC1150.
Bottles are pushed on mass onto a central rotary in-feed table from a collapsible
placement table by the operator. These are then fed via a starwheel to an integral automatic
filler station supplied by means of a peristaltic pump. The caps are then manually placed
before being moving on to the capping station, where they are tightened by one of Cap Coders Tri-Torque capping heads that is torque
and speed controlled. The cycle is completed when the bottles arrive at the collating
area for packaging. All of this completed within a very small footprint that can easily
be handled by the one operator.
A pre-count functionality and plc control ensure that the operator can leave the
machine to fulfil other duties for short periods safe in the knowledge that the machine
will continue to operate safely.
Depending on filling requirements, the CC1170 is capable of production rates of 30
bottles per minute. Bottle sizes typically range between 10 ml and 1 ltr and electrical
or pneumatic capping drives are available depending on client choice and application
demands.
The CC1170 will be an effective product asset for any company needing to fill and
cap bottles with high value contents in small batches, maximise the use of high cost
human resources and keep running costs to a minimum.
The CC1170 is in production now with a delivery forecast of 8 weeks from receipt of
order.

| Peristaltic Filling Machine
The Cap Coder 'Alphafill' Peristaltic Filler uses the latest in high quality, high performance pump heads.
The pump heads are driven by a variable speed brushless dc motor for accurate speed control and low maintenance.
The pump head is digitally controlled using a pulse sensing system.
This control gives consistent stop and start positioning of the pump rollers.
The pump motor has a suck-back feature, which can be used if required to eliminate any dripping after the dosing stops.
Two pump heads can be fitted for a faster filling rate or twin filling.
The pump features Touch Screen control, and dosing program storage.
An interface socket is fitted for remote operation.
Operation is very easy.
Select the tube from the chart which shows set point recommendations for a range of doses.
These set point values are only a guide for the size of tube and speed of the pump.
The set point can be adjusted by increments or by entering a new number.
Note also that two pump heads can be used for faster filling into a single container or half filling into separate containers.
To load the tube into the pump head, lift the pump top lever to slide open the track.
Turn the two adjusting clamps to suit the diameter of the tube.
Load the tube and close the lever.
Place the in-feed end of the tube into the product container and the out-feed end onto a suitable filling nozzle.

| Aurora Scientific
As a key supplier of sterile and non-sterile bottles to the water industry,
Aurora Scientific approached Cap Coder to design a machine that could handle
its wide range of bottles and caps.
Cap Coders CC560 Starwheel based machine has a number of features specifically
aimed at resolving such operational problems.
The number of indexes per revolution enables 4 indexes to cater for 5 litre containers,
followed by 16 indexes per revolution to cater for 25 millilitre bottles for instance.
The PLC controlled servo indexing drive gives a smooth action.
Whilst the capping head is adjustable to suit the height of the bottle, the cap feed is at
a constant height.
The cap is raised to the head for pick up by a vertical escapement which greatly simplifies the variable cap feeding mechanisms.
Production rates are maintained using a twin capping head arrangement;
one head is picking a cap whilst the other is screwing a cap onto a bottle
before swinging through 180 deg. to repeat the process.
Aurora Scientific’s Managing Director Brian Hepburn and the Design Team at Cap Coder
worked together to produce the application specific to the types of bottles and the caps required.
Brian Hepburn said ‘Working in partnership with Cap Coder continues to produce beneficial solutions
for this application and other ongoing projects’.

| Gentle Touch
Growing SMEs in the packaging industry and particularly those supplying the Food and Beverage market need to code their products. Whilst there are many coding methods available such as laser and ink jets, many growing companies continue to opt for contact ink coders.
Cap Coder based in Oxfordshire, England is only too well aware of this need and that is why it continues to develop and support its industry renowned Gentle Touch™ coder.
What makes the Gentle Touch™ so popular and the preferred choice of many?
It consistently satisfies the important need for reliability of print performance. High speeds can be achieved of 160 per min without damage to packaging; a fact proven by its ability to code the surface of an egg yoke. Needless to say, if it can do that, plastic tubs, foil lids, cartons, glass and metals cans are no problem.
Fast and reliable, it is also very easy to operate and clean to use. With many components made of stainless steel and few moving parts its maintenance demands are minimal and cleaning can be concluded quickly; vital for the coding of food packaging.
The small print heads are fitted with a type holder which carries the hard wearing rubber type. The type sets are supplied by Cap Coder and easily replaced in seconds.
The multi coloured ink cartridges are also supplied by Cap Coder and are designed to ensure ease of replacement without the need for the operator to come in contact with the quick drying ink. Trials confirm that Cap Coder dye ink cartridges will print over 50,000 ‘sell by date’ codes using 2.5mm type before requiring replacement.
The Gentle Touch™ can be purchased with control modules to be incorporated into a production line.
Alternatively, it can be included as part of the functionality of Cap Coders range of capping machines. For low quantity short runs, the coder and module can be combined in one machine being supplied as a semi automatic top or bottom coder for bench top deployment.
If you are a growing company, have a limited budget and need to code a range of products, then the Gentle Touch™ will probably meet your needs. You will find that it is as gentle on your pocket as it is on your products.

| Money Saving Adjustable Starwheel
All companies strive to improve production efficiency and reduce wastage. This is particularly the case in the packaging industry where set up and batch change turn round times need to be reduced as much as possible.
In collaboration with one of its clients in the Pharmaceutical industry, Cap Coder has developed an innovative Starwheel that negates the need for the client to purchase, store and maintain a wide range of change parts; a considerable cost saving.
The Pharmaceutical company in question was already using Cap Coders highly successful CC560 fully automatic PLC controlled capping machine. However, because of client demand for containers of varying sizes and shapes, more and more change parts were required. Subsequent constant changes and disruption to the production process began to counter the inherent efficiencies of the CC560.
Cap Coder’s engineers needed to respond quickly to design a universal star wheel that could accept a variety of shapes that included round, square, oval and rectangular containers. They also had to accommodate sizes within a range of 25mm to 85mm cross sectional dimension. What finally evolved is the Cap Coder Adjustable Starwheel.
Made of hard wearing and robust HDPE, the Cap Coder Adjustable Starwheel is simple to install and can be adjusted in situ without any tooling and with the minimum of operating training. One simple adjustment alters the width of the pocket about the centre line, whilst another alters the root dimension of the pocket independently. Disruption to production flow is minimal.
The variable Starwheel not only saves money, it enables Production organisations to rapidly respond to changing client need; maintaining existing business whilst capturing new opportunities.

| Thermo Fisher
Cap Coder Ltd the UK based manufacturer of capping and coding machines is proud to report another delivery of its best selling and highly adaptable automatic capping machine; the CC560.
The CC560 is a cost effective automatic starwheel based machine, with twin capping heads. Used in conjunction with an existing slat conveyor, it handles products typically in the 100ml to 5 litre range and can be used for screw or push on caps at a rate of 40 per minute.
Fully automatic PLC controlled with servo indexing, and either electric or pneumatic capping drive, it is easy to install and operate incorporating inexpensive change parts, starwheel, fence and jaws that can be changed in a few minutes.
At the heart of the machine are the Tri-Torque capping heads that can be accurately set for torque and speed.
Thermo Fisher Scientific (until recently HyClone) needed a capping machine for its Utah facility that would provide consistently accurate torque application of the capping process.
Having conducted a global search, Thermo Fisher Scientific concluded that the CC560 met all of its operational and design needs whilst providing ample scope for future development.
Distance and time constraints did not affect the ability of Cap Coder and Thermo Fisher Scientific engineers and designers to work in partnership throughout the project.
On completion of the acceptance trials Gary Graetz, Director Cell Culture Engineering, remarked that Cap Coder had won the contract ‘because of your positive and professional approach to present and future customer needs’.
